The city of Fairburn in Georgia is a suburb of northern Atlanta. Although it is close to Atlanta, it is known for its rich, distinct history and its numerous attractions. While many towns and cities in the US are named for their founders or prominent landowners, Fairburn is named after the town of Fairburn in England. Although it doesn't have the same vast areas of land as its English counterpart, the city of Fairburn nevertheless has some beautiful natural areas. Whether you're staying for a day, a week, or permanently, there are always places to visit and sights to see.
Fairburn's History
Fairburn started in the early 1800s. While the addition of the railroad improved many towns and cities, Fairburn was built alongside an existing railway. That railroad line, called the Atlanta and West Point Railroad, serviced the greater area of Campell County and beyond. Fairburn initially shared a name and geographical boundaries with the neighboring city of Campbellton. Eventually, the two towns merged into one, and Campbellton became assimilated into Fairburn. This merger significantly increased Fairburn's population size. Eventually, Fairburn was selected as Campbell County's official county seat, which was decided in 1871. Fairburn's strong economy and governance helped it survive the Great Depression, even when the rest of the county went bankrupt.
The year 1871 marked the start of steady progress for Fairburn, which developed a thriving economy with the proximity of Atlanta and the train station. Although it was initially based on agriculture, especially hay production, Fairburn's economy gradually modernized to include more industrial activities. Several businesses and conveniences served the city's population size of just over 300 residents. This included multiple grocery stores, several dry goods stores, and a hotel that drew tourists from around the country. Fairburn's prominent local businesses including a printing press that produced the weekly newspaper, several factories that created an assortment of consumer products, marble quarries, an oil mill, and cotton gins. The city was also home to four saloons. Later, the city gained a school and several churches. In the mid-1920s, when Fairburn's population size had reached more than 1,600 people, its status was changed from a town to a city.
Over time, much of Fairburn's economic and social activity developed around its town center. Many of its original buildings have been preserved, and its train depots have been maintained as well. The town center is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is considered a Commercial Historic District too, which is a significant advantage for local business owners looking for more business. Along with its original buildings, Fairburn's downtown center also showcases several different types of architecture, including Italianate and Neoclassical. The original courthouse that once served as the county seat remains, and it is used for educational purposes and guided tours.
