There are many historic buildings and sites scattered throughout the town. If you are looking to take a trip back into the past, you will not want to miss the fun in Fayetteville.

Originally, the land was a territory of the Creek people in the southwestern region of Georgia. In 1822, the area was founded by a group of European settlers. The town is named after the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette. Fayetteville incorporated as a town in 1823. During this time, the area was used for cotton production. The town became one of the most significant trading towns for agricultural goods. By 1909, the town was rapidly expanding and decided to incorporate as a city. In the early 1900s, the agricultural production process became more mechanized. Many of the workers left the area to move to northern or midwestern towns. Today, the city is seeing revitalization in the population. As a result, Fayetteville is continuing to grow and offers exciting opportunities for its residents.

If you are looking for a glimpse in Fayetteville's past, you will want to head over to the Fayette County Courthouse. Built in 1825, this structure is the oldest surviving courthouse in the state. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It has a unique architecture with a stucco roof sitting atop the brick building. The hipped roof features a bracketed cornice. There were some additions added throughout the years. In 1888, a tower was installed on the building. The clock was also added in 1909. You can find this building in the middle of Fayetteville's town square. Today, the courthouse is used as a welcome center for visitors to the town. A new courthouse was built a few miles away from the town's center. The courthouse still houses the offices of the Fayette County Development Authority and the Fayetteville Main Street Association. Visitors are welcomed to explore this unique building.

You may want to check out another site on the National Register of Historic Places. The Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House is located one block west of the courthouse square. It was built in 1855 by the uncle of the gambler John Henry "Doc" Holliday. Dr. John Stiles Holliday practice medicine in the house from 1847 to 1865. The city of Fayetteville purchased the home in 1999. Today, it is used as a local history museum for the town. You may also want to look at more historical artifacts at the local library. The Margaret Mitchell Library is named in honor of the author. It was built in 1948, and it serves as the headquarters of the Fayette County Historical Society. Inside the building, you can see the exhibits on the Civil War. For those wanting to trace their heritage to the area, the library has a vast collection of genealogical records.
