Penfield lawn care services
Almost two million years ago, the geography surrounding Penfield NY was formed by the same melting glaciers that formed the Finger Lakes. The terrain around Ellison Park primarily reflects this. The melting glaciers left rich, fertile farmland perfect for growing fruit orchards of cherries, apples, peaches, plums, and pears. In fact, following the American Revolution, the area around Penfield was settled as a farming community. The town was officially incorporated in 1810. Before the post-war settlement, the land was used for hunting and fishing by the Seneca Nation of the Native American Haudenosaunee tribes.
Today, the residents of Penfield work at major corporations, rather than at farming. Some of the employers in Penfield include Wegmans, Paychex, and Nalge Nunc International. However, Penfield preserves the feel of its rural past in its parks; this small city of 36,000 has more than a dozen beautiful parks.
Wickham Farms on Route 250 harkens back to the old farming days. They not only grow a corn maze and seven different heirloom varieties of pumpkin for the fall, but they also host a Community Supported Agriculture program. It is a great place to enjoy a hayride, host a birthday party, or have a field trip for the kids. The Engleside Stables, with its horses grazing peacefully in the paddock, is also a reminder of Penfield's farming days. Likewise, the Oak and Apple Cidery on Dublin Road grows and presses their own apples to ferment, age and bottle old fashioned ciders. The founding fathers would certainly appreciate the classic taste of these traditionally brewed ciders.
Ellison Park is just east of Route 590 on Blossom Road. The park has 447 acres of beautiful natural woodlands covering the steep slopes. The trees have grown down to the floodplain along the Irondequoit Creek. Much of the environment of the park is as it was before settlement. Ellison Park also has five softball fields, a multi-use athletic field, tennis courts, an off-leash dog park, and a kid's playground. You can also fish, kayak or canoe on Irondequoit Creek, as well as wander the intricate trail system. The massive, stone Fort Schuyler within the park is a reproduction of the original fort built in 1833.
Although Channing H. Philbrick Park is right in Penfield, it gives you the sense you're really in the backwoods. The hiking trail along the stream lies between steep hills and traverses fields of wildflowers in the spring and summer. There is a sense of solitude and beauty, even though you're really in town.
Sherwood Fields Park has 82-acres of nature. The trail system leads through very scenic open space, surrounded by majestic trees. The trails are paved and wide, allowing for not only bicycles but also wheelchairs. In the winter, Sherwood Fields is an excellent place to go snow-shoeing or cross country skiing.
Spring Lake Park has easy access to Irondequoit Creek and is known as a good place to fish for steelhead salmon during the early spring. The park also has two softball fields, a beautiful playground for the kids, and picnic areas. It's also a popular alternative to the "official" off-leash dog park.
Rothfuss Park is a great place to take the kids for the playground and soccer fields. Harris Whalen Park also has a good playground for the kids and is a great park for all types of sports year round. Whalen Park also has a lodge for special events and parties.
