With a population size of around 11,000 residents, Glenn Heights is one of the smaller cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. However, its small size doesn't mean that Glenn Heights is not a popular place to live. In fact, quite the opposite is true, and it's considered one of the top places to live in work in the area. Excellent schools, proximity to both Dallas and Fort Worth, and the fact that it still has undeveloped lands are some of the biggest draws of this Texas city today.
A History of Glenn Heights
Unlike many cities in Texas that date back to the 1800s, Glenn Heights is a much more recent addition to the Lone Star State. Early in the 1960s, the city's development began with a firefighter named "Moe" Craddock, who established the first park for mobile homes in the area. The park, which covered 30 acres, was intended to prevent the city's fire department (and its lands) from being acquired by the larger nearby city of Dallas. The plan worked, and the takeover was prevented. In 1969, the city was formally incorporated. Craddock remained a key fixture in the Glenn Heights scene, acting as a vital part of its town council from the 1970s through the 1980s. Craddock was elected to be the town's mayor in 1985 and served in office on and off from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. By 1970, the city was home to over 250 residents. That number increased to more than 1,000 people in 1980 and to 4,500 in 1990. In spite of the rapid residential growth, however, over 50% of the city's land is still open and undeveloped.
Events in Glenn Heights
Although it has grown tremendously in size since its foundation, Glenn Heights still retains a small-town community atmosphere with plenty of fun things to do and places to explore for both its residents and its visitors. If you're wondering what's coming up in Glenn Heights to add to your calendar, this list will help you out.
Veterans' Day 5K
Given that it was established by a firefighter, Glenn Heights is especially appreciative of those who serve both the city and the nation. One of its popular events is the Veterans' Day 5K, which is a combined run and festive party that raises funds for the area's veterans. The event, which takes place at the Heritage Community Park, is held on November 10th each year.
Family Festival
A highlight of the event is a series of musical performances offered by musicians. Local artists and bigger-name bands are part of the festivities. As one would expect in a Texas festival, there is also good food and plenty of fun activities provided at the Family Festival, which has been a staple part of the community calendar for nearly ten years.
Black History Month
Every year in February, Glenn Heights has a month-long celebration dedicated to honoring the African American community. Educational events are a central component of the celebration, but there are also many fun and festive activities, too. The city's own civil rights leaders engage in talks with community members, and the community participates in discussions of ways to improve racial equity locally and on a broader scale. Interactive games, prizes and giveaways, and popular festival foods are all part of the event.
Holiday in the Park and Christmas Tree Lighting
Each year, the city hosts its own version of holiday celebrations. Specifically, it has a tree-lighting ceremony and festive celebration in early to mid-December that is held in the Heritage Community Park. The community is invited to help light up the annual Christmas tree. Holiday games, activities, and food are also part of the celebration. The ceremony also contains a toy drive that is designed to provide Christmas gifts to local children who might otherwise not receive presents. Residents and visitors are welcome to attend the event.
