Are you looking for one of the best places to settle down and start a family? Maybe you need an area that offers you a laid-back, small-town feeling but with the added bonus of a big city nearby. That's where Dallas, Atlanta, Georgia comes in. The city of Dallas placed in the Top 20 of CNN and Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live" in the country back in 2007. It continues to be a fantastic area for the thousands of people who live there.
The History of Dallas
Dallas was named after the vice president who served under James K. Polk, George M. Dallas. The area is located in Paulding County. Originally, the city was a part of the Creek Indians reservation until the land was lost in a fight in 1755 to the Cherokee Nation. At that point, the land was used as a crossroads for those who lived around the area.
In 1828, many areas of Georgia were quickly becoming known for having gold. The Georgia Gold Rush began, and many people all over the country headed to the state to conduct their own search. Paulding County became separated into "Gold Lots" of 40-acres each, although those who came to the area to look for gold did not find as much as they had hoped for. Instead, many of these settlers started to grow crops on their 40-acres of land instead. This was also the time where many of the Cherokee Indians began to be forced from the land.
Dallas is also home to many battle sites of the American Civil War, which happened in 1864. Three battles, The Battle of Pickett's Mill, The Battle of New Hope Church, and The Battle of Dallas all took place within the town. However, the town flourished after the war was over. The textile industry became a big part of the area, and the Seaboard and Southern Railroads began construction here as well. The Dallas New Era, the county's first print newspaper, was also introduced to residents around this time.
