Lawrenceville lawn care

Initially, it might not seem like New Jersey and Georgia have much in common. But it turns out they share a common hero, James Lawrence. Lawrence, originally from New Jersey, commanded a ship in the War of 1812. The commander is best known for his reported final command telling shipmates to not give up on the ship. In honor of the fearless leader's ambition, the city voted to adopt the name "Lawrence" in his honor. The suffix "ville" was later added to make it more unique.

The city of Lawrenceville was officially incorporated in 1821. That same year, it received a county courthouse. Its town center also expanded by a total of four streets. One of the city's first (and youngest) mayors was Courtland Winn, who assumed office at age 21 in 1884 and held two successive terms.

Throughout its history, the city has had several notable residents. They include Charles Henry Smith, who wrote for numerous Atlanta newspapers under the pen name of "Bill Arp." Another famous resident was Ezzard Charles, who was a heavyweight boxing champion from Cincinnati. Lawrenceville was also home to Oliver Hardy, who was a prominent actor in the 1920s. Religion has always been a fundamental part of the city's identity, and today it is the headquarters for the Presbyterian Church of America.

Things to do in Lawrenceville

Whether you're a full-time resident or a visitor looking for something fun to do while in town, there is never a shortage of things to do in Lawrenceville. From musical events to holiday celebrations, the city has something going on at all times of the year.

Aurora Theatre

The Aurora Theatre features plays, musicals, and shows throughout the year. The theatre hosts many shows through a series of innovative programs. A children's playhouse, comedy nights, and Teatro Aurora, which is a Hispanic chapter of the theatre, are all popular parts of the Aurora Theatre. Along with its regular productions, the theatre also hosts a series of popular events. In April, a town-wide 5K run is dedicated to raising funds for the continued operation of the Aurora Theatre.

Ghost Tours

There are many historic towns in the US, and Lawrenceville is one of them. Through the ghost tours, which take place on weekend evenings, residents and visitors can visit the city's most haunted places and get a dose of its history in the process. The tours begin at the Aurora Theatre and travel to some of the most well-known haunted places in the city. The event is open to children and adults. In October, the ghost tours merge with a local brewery to offer pub crawls through the city. This unique combination gives tour attendees the opportunity to sample some of the area's finest beer while learning about its haunted past.

Sugarloaf Mills

Sugarloaf Mills is one of the area's premier shopping destinations. It is a large mall filled with many name-brand stores and retailers. There are more than 180 establishments at this retail center, which is just 30 minutes away from Atlanta. Along with a number of stores, there are multiple restaurants on site and a movie theatre. Medieval Times, another popular destination in the area, is also located in the shopping center.

Freeman's Grist Mill

This gristmill, which once supported the city's economy, is now a critical historic attraction. It is also the most recent addition to the list of the county's parks. One of the main components of the mill is a large playground that provides hours-long recreational opportunities for children to enjoy. The original mill is believed to have been constructed sometime between 1868 and 1880. By the mid-1990s, it was one of the last 15 working mills in Georgia, and the only one remaining in the county. With that distinction, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Local farmers once used the mill to turn their corn and wheat into flour, which they insisted gave it a sweeter and richer taste.

Lawrenceville is a city that is equally proud of its past and its present. From its original grist mill to its ghost tours, there are many places to visit to get a sense of the city's unique and diverse past. However, most property owners prefer to give their property a modern look. To make your yard look lively, not like ghost tour material, simply call Lawn Love, your local lawn care professionals, for assistance.
