Are you looking for a town that is not only full of fun and exciting things to do but also one that has beautiful landscapes and architecture? Then Lilburn, Atlanta, Georgia is the place to be. This small town of 11,596 people is a lovely area close enough to the city to enjoy the city life, yet far enough away to experience everything a small town offers.
This area of Georgia was known as "McDaniel" before the change to Lilburn. The Seaboard Air Line Railway officially founded the city of Lilburn in 1890. The name was chosen to honor Lilburn Trigg Myers, the superintendent of the railroad. The railroad is still in service and runs on an hourly basis through what is known as the "Old Town." The city of Lilburn prospered until a devastating fire in the 1920s plunged the town into difficult economic times that were then exacerbated by the Great Depression. The fire started on November 15, 1920, in the Lilburn Supply Company building. It unfortunately destroyed the whole business section of the city, except for two stores that escaped unscathed. The volunteer bucket brigade was able to stop the fire before it tore into the residential part of the city.
The city began to regrow in 1955 when the need for a new water line arose. The town grew as new buildings were constructed, such as the Calvin Fitchett Municipal Complex and the new City Hall building. The city continues to grow as a combined City Hall, and Library are set to be built in the area, along with a realigned Main Street.
Since the state of Georgia enjoys hot, muggy summers, there are always plenty of outdoor activities for couples and families to enjoy. Lilburn City Park is one great public park that is perfect for hot days and cool fall nights. The park has plenty of trails that are perfect for walkers, runners, and bicyclists who enjoy the outdoors. The park is pet-friendly, although dogs must be leashed at all times. There are updated playgrounds for kids to play on and sprinkler days in the summer for kids and adults to cool off in. Lilburn City Park also offers pavilion areas for parties.
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is located in Lilburn and is an exciting tourist attraction for visitors of any faith. It is a traditional Hindu mandir, which is a place of worship, and holds the record for the biggest mandir outside of the country of India. It is built from 34,450 separate pieces of hand-cut and carved Turkish Limestone, Italian marble, and Indian pink sandstone. The beautifully landscaped grounds total more than 30 acres. The mandir complex includes an interesting exhibition that goes over the finer points of Hinduism.
Lilburn, Georgia has the perfect climate for residents and business owners who want to maintain a gorgeous lawn. Both cool and warm grass types can be used on the lawns as the city sits on a transition zone. Many different grass types can be used for lawns, school grounds, stadiums, and outdoor parks. Bermuda grass is one of the more common types found in residential yards, as well as high-traffic areas such as golf courses and football stadiums. This is because it has a high tolerance for extreme foot traffic and is tolerant of cold and drought. Zoysia is another grass that is perfect for yards and fields in transition zones as it is drought resistant, as well. However, zoysia will need to be watered more frequently than other grass types. Other grass types that you may find in the area are centipede grass, fescue, and St. Augustine.
