The nickname "City Without Limits" is fitting for this quickly-expanding city in Kaufman County. Forney is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth region of Texas. As of the 2010 census, it had a population size of just under 15,000 people. Forney bears the distinction of the "Antique Capital of Texas" for the fact that it has nearly 100 antique dealers within its borders. Even if you're not shopping for antiques, there are many great places to see in Forney. Whether you're a resident or passing through, the city has some notable annual events worth seeing, too.
Forney's Annual Events
Throughout the year, there is always something to look forward to in Forney. From celebrating Texas-style food to important holidays and the seasons, there's always something coming up on Forney's community calendar of events.
The BBQ Cook-Off is one of the newest of Forney's annual events, but it has quickly become one of the most popular. The cook-off takes place on June 1st at the city's community park. Participants compete in a cook-off competition, judged by event attendees, for the best-barbecued ribs in Forney. There are also vendors on site selling barbecue supplies and sauces, country and western-style apparel, homemade crafts, and other local products. Vendors fall into one of three categories, which are specialty products and crafts, commercial vendors, and food vendors.
Independence Day Celebration
Each year, Forney kicks off the 4th of July celebration with a warm-up party on June 29. This celebration, sponsored by the town, is free to attend. It includes activities for people of all ages, including live musical entertainment, rides, and food trucks selling festival-style foods such as pizza, tacos, ice cream, and hot dogs. The event, in keeping with Independence Day traditions, culminates with a fireworks display at the end. It also has many children's activities such as face painting and bounce houses.
Movies and Music
Everyone likes to spend as much time as possible outside in the summer. Since movies and musical entertainment are some of the most popular pastimes in Texas, why not combine both into one event? That's just what Forney did with this popular summertime series, which is held at the Spellman Amphitheater. The events start with a movie on Friday evenings followed by a weekend concert. Before each show, event-goers can participate in raffles and drawings to win an assortment of prizes. Cover bands, tribute bands, and local bands take the stage during concert nights. The event runs from early May through late June.
Trail of Treats
Right before Halloween each year, Forney hosts an admission-free trick-or-treating event for children. The "trail" is set up downtown and features more than 50 stations where children can get candy. Children's games, an arts and crafts booth, and live entertainment are all part of the day's events.
Christmas in Forney
On the first day of December, Forney hosts a special holiday event called "Christmas in the Park." It is set up at the Forney Community Park and features a tree-lighting ceremony along with children's activities and classic holiday cuisine.
Along with its packed calendar of events, Forney has interesting sights to check out throughout the year, too.
If the name alone doesn't draw your attention, the excitement offered at this paintball safari will. At the Zombie Safari, visitors ride around in one of three different styles of cars to ward off zombie attacks using one of two styles of paintball guns. This place is popular with adults and children.
Along with its active antiques scene, Forney's history is captured at the Spellman Museum, which is located in the city's historic district. The museum features exhibits with relics, artifacts, and old photographs that show Forney's past. While there are always some new and rotating exhibits, permanent collections include exhibits dedicated to Native American culture, Forney's early wildlife, its life during the Great Depression, and its agricultural past.
Although Forney is one of the smaller towns in Texas, its personality shines through in its events and attractions. Many of its events take place on lush green areas in the town center. Even though you won't be hosting city-wide events on your own property, that doesn't mean you can't keep it in event-ready shape.
