Named for a scenic waterway (the Rowlett Creek) that runs through its backyard, it is evident that nature is part of Rowlett's identity. Rowlett began as a town in 1880 when it got its first post office. Then, it had 250 residents. Today, it is a much larger city with a population size of 60,000. Although Rowlett started out with a rural landscape and agriculture-based economy, it is now a hub of development and innovation. Although the city's population size dramatically increased during the 1960s, it is most well-known for an ambitious development plan, proposed in 2015, to construct the state's first-ever crystal lagoon. While this grand-scale project is bringing residents and visitors to Rowlett, the city has other notable events and sights that draw the crowds, too.
Special Events in Rowlett
Each year, the city hosts a variety of special events. Some are smaller and community-oriented, while others attract visitors from farther away. Regardless of whether they draw large or small crowds, these events are popular and a fundamental part of the city's annual calendar.
Cardboard Boat Regatta
Every year in April, the city's community park hosts the annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. The Regatta features boats made of cardboard designed to carry passengers. The boats come in many interesting shapes, colors, and designs. They are held together only with tape and transport anywhere from three to five passengers. Participants launch their boats to kick off the event. The vessel that stays intact the longest wins. Prizes are also awarded in several different categories. There are sections dedicated to youth and adult participants.
Fireworks on Main
Every year, the city hosts a lively annual event to celebrate the nation's birthday. This event, called Fireworks on Main, takes place in Pecan Grove Park. Admission is free, and the event offers many fun activities including live music, an exciting game of laser tag, a children's play zone, and a cornhole tournament. Vendors are on hand to provide attendees with a variety of foods for all palettes. Of course, the main attraction of the event is a dazzling 16-minute fireworks display that includes a special surprise element.
Summer Concert Series
Another favorite (and free) event hosted by Rowlett is the summer concert series. Taking place each Friday in August, it offers riveting performances from local cover bands. In addition to live entertainment, the concert series features onsite food trucks providing Texas comfort foods and more diverse international cuisine.
Movies on Main
Main Street, as evidenced, is a happening place for the city's most popular events. This outdoor event takes place every Friday in September. Films start at dusk, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets to watch favorite films under the stars. Children's activities include special entertainment and treats such as snow cones, ice cream, and popcorn. Local vendors provide food and refreshing beverages for adults, too.
What to do in Rowlett
Along with its annual events, Rowlett has many sites worth visiting year-round. Many include natural areas like lakes and preserves. However, there are sites dedicated to sports and entertainment, too.
Rowlett Wet Zone
This facility, which is owned by the city, has a swimming pool open for public use. Swimming lessons and aerobics classes are offered too. There is also a water park in the wet zone with slides and a playground to provide fun for all ages.
Rowlett Community Park
The scenic Rowlett Community Park features nearly 140 acres designed for a variety of recreational endeavors with playgrounds and athletic fields for sports. A trail system provides an opportunity for hiking and exercising, while the community lake supports fishing and other aquatic activities.
Waterview Golf Club
Offering challenging courses for players of all levels and abilities, Waterview Golf Club is one of the region's most popular championship golf courses. Along with a par 72 course, the beautiful property is characterized by more than 1,500 trees and 15 acres' worth of lakes. There is also an onsite bar and restaurant for post-game relaxation.
Rowlett has some of the most scenic and naturally beautiful places in the area, and the city takes pride in its scenic attractions.
