Plano, Texas is home to many of the country's top corporate headquarters. It has also been called one of the best places to live in the West by CNN and Money magazine for multiple years in a row. With a generally mild climate and exciting annual events, this vibrant city is one of the most attractive places to live, work, and visit in the Lone Star State.
Plano's Popular Events
Each year Plano hosts two popular events, which are the Plano International Festival and the Plano Balloon Festival. Of all the city's ongoing annual events, of which there are many, these two events are considered some of its best in terms of culture and entertainment.
Plano Balloon Festival
The Plano Balloon Festival takes place over a three-day weekend in September. Along with hot air balloon races, where competitors jockey for the top prize, there are plenty of events for the public. Some are both related to ballooning, while others are not. The event kicks off with a grand celebratory fireworks display. For ballooning enthusiasts and families with younger children, the tethered balloon rides are one of the festival's biggest highlights. There is also live musical entertainment at this annual event. Other activities include running races and photography opportunities.
Plano International Festival
Plano is a diverse city, and its international festival pays homage to that fact. The festival celebrates nationalities, traditions, and cultures from around the world with a special event that takes place in Haggard Park located in downtown Plano. At this festival, one can virtually tour the world by visiting booths with information about the traditions and cultures of various countries. The event includes an annual fashion show that highlights traditional attire from countries represented at the festival. There is also a food festival featuring cuisine native to Texas (such as hot dogs, shaved ice, hamburgers, and more) and traditional foods from around the world. Indian food, Asian cuisine, and Mexican foods are some of the top ethnic groups represented in the food truck round-up. Specialties include Indian dosas, samosas, roti, quesadillas, tamales, and authentic tacos.
Activities in Plano
Along with its premium festivals, there are many other fun and exciting things to do in Plano year-round, including premium shopping opportunities downtown and beautiful natural areas to explore.
Dark Hour Haunted House
There are always fascinating shows taking place at the Dark Hour Haunted House, which features exciting theatrics and Broadway-level acting. The building covers 47,000 square feet, including more than 30,000 feet of an indoor terror zone. Long, dark hallways bring terrifying sights for visitors seeking a thrill. The haunted house also has an outdoor component too, which includes an expansive, high-tech graveyard that gives visitors the illusion of stepping from Plano into another world.
Heritage Plano Museum
The Heritage Plano Museum resides in an original renovated homestead that was built in 1891. The homestead sits on a property that covers four areas of land that is part of the original 365-acre parcel on which the homestead stood. The building was once the home of the wealthy Farrell family, who moved from Virginia to Texas seeking land and better weather in the 1800s.
Downtown Plano
For anyone who enjoys shopping, a visit to downtown Plano is essential. The town center contains a combination of modern and historic buildings. Small, locally-owned and independent shops are fixtures on the scene of the bustling town center. Art exhibitions take place throughout the year, and you'll also find art for sale and local wines. There are a variety of unique vintage clothing stores too, and shops selling handmade jewelry and other gifts. In addition to its standard storefront shopping, downtown Plano is also the center for events throughout the year such as concerts, outdoor movies, holiday events, and more. There are some excellent restaurants downtown too that are ideal for refueling in between shopping adventures.
