Allen saw its beginnings in the mid-1800s as settlers moved in, displacing the Native population. Cattle thrived in this area for decades, until the railroad arrived after the Civil War. The Houston and Central Railroad founded the settlement that eventually became Allen. In 1872, they named the new town for Ebenezer Allen, a politician who promoted the railroad industry throughout the state.


With the arrival of the railroad, the local agriculture base shifted from cattle to crops. This was the main economic force until after World War II. With only a few hundred residents, the community incorporated into the town of Allen in 1953.


The small town grew to over 90,000 in just over 60 years. Today, it's a suburban enclave as well as a commercial center for businesses like Experian and Frontier Communications.


Sports is a big part of life in Allen. The Allen Event Center hosts two sports teams. The Allen Americans are a minor league hockey team playing in the ECHL. The Dallas Sidekicks are a professional indoor soccer team playing in the Major Area Soccer League. The Allen High School Eagles call Eagle Stadium home.
