Garland lawn care

There's a popular saying that things are bigger and better in Texas, and Garland is living proof. This city, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, spans Dallas, Collin, and Rockwall counties. Garland has a population size of about 227,000 residents, which makes it one of the biggest cities in Texas. Garland was ranked in the top 100 places to live in the US by CNN in 2008 and Money magazine. It's also been rated as one of the "most livable" cities in the Lone Star State and one of the best places for affordable living.

Garland's Past

Garland was initially part of the Peters colony. The earliest settlers arrived in the area around 1850, but it was not officially founded until 40 years later. Unlike many towns and cities in Texas, which had plenty of room between their neighbors, two communities (one of which was Garland) set up in the same area simultaneously. This led to a growing conflict between the two communities. In addition to their encroaching space, the two towns were at odds due to the construction of a single railroad depot, called the Santa Fe, that served both towns. However, because of the lucrative business and prominence that having a town-owned railroad stop could bring, both towns wanted the railroad depot for themselves. Eventually, the skirmish between the two places was settled once and for all when the towns' two post offices were merged into one. This move led the way for a greater merger that combined the two towns. The merged towns were officially incorporated in 1891 under the single name of "Garland."

Following the town-border dispute, it seemed that Garland was finally settled and looking forward to the future. Its economy started to grow in earnest during the early 1900s. Unfortunately, however, a devastating tornado struck the city in 1927. The tornado killed the town's mayor and destroyed many local businesses. It wasn't until the 1930s, nearly 10 years later, that businesses moved back into the town and it considered itself to be back on track as far as economic growth was concerned.

The fact that Garland's economic growth coincided with WWII is not unique among Texas cities. Garland is unique in that its economic stimulus came from different sources than most, radio and food. Two big economic drivers that came to town in 1950, and consequently boosted Garland's economy, where Kraft Foods and a Dallas radio station called KRLD. Following the economic revitalization of the city, urban growth naturally ensued.
