Take Pride in Maintaining an Attractive Yard
With so many incredible attractions, it's hard to spend the weekend focusing on yard work. You take pride in your home, and you like to keep it looking as good as possible. When you're ready to rejuvenate your yard, you should consider everything that aerating your lawn can do for you.
When you aerate your grass, it breaks up the soil and creates small air pockets. By breaking up the earth, it allows a more significant amount of oxygen, water, and nutrients to be absorbed into the surrounding dirt. The results are going to impress you.
Aerating Your Lawn is Your Key to Getting a Greener Yard
There are two kinds of aerating, spike aeration and core aeration. Both techniques are effective and will yield impressive results. Aerating your soil helps increase your grass yield by breaking up the ground, creating small air pockets in the surrounding land. How does that help? It allows more oxygen, nutrients, and water to be absorbed into the ground.
The result? Your grass will, within 2 to 3 weeks, grow a stronger root system. You'll be able to see a difference, with turfgrass that's thick and lush with a vibrantly emerald green color. What's even better? Your grass will be better able to retain moisture, even as the temperature rises in the summer and early autumn months.
Spike aeration can be performed in many ways. You can wear aeration shoes that put spiked holes in the ground as you walk. You can also try purchasing or renting an aerator from a local hardware store or garden center. Of course, you can consider hiring a team of yard care professionals like us to assist you with your seasonal lawn care needs. We're here to help you anytime. If you choose to do spike aeration, you will drill holes into the ground at intervals of a couple of inches. With spike aeration, you'll generally get a depth of approximately 1 to 2 inches below the ground surface.
Spike and Core Aerating Produces Great Results
In contrast, core or plug aeration requires that you bore small plugs and remove them from the soil. With core aeration, you dig a little deeper, down to a depth of approximately 2 to 3 inches. As a result, you won't have to aerate as frequently if you choose core aeration over spike aeration, but both techniques will work.
If you choose core aeration, you can leave the soil plugs on the lawn as they have microorganisms in them that help promote a healthy lawn. Many people leave them in the grass as the plugs will disintegrate in just 2 to 3 weeks. If you find them too unsightly, you can also rake and compost them. Either technique of aeration will give you a much thicker and healthier looking lawn as your grasses have the opportunity to expand into a more robust root system.
Use a High-Quality Fertilizer
Once you've completed aerating your lawn, you can apply a high-grade fertilizer to promote your grass developing a richly green color. Be sure to choose a quality fertilizer that's nitrogen-based and slow-release. If you decide to use a slower released fertilizer, it helps to fight against fertilizer burn, which is a common cause of brown lawns.
Prevent Fertilizer Burn
If you detect your grass is starting to turn brown shortly after you've applied fertilizer, be sure to water your lawn thoroughly by applying 1 to 2 inches of water. If you soak your lawn fully, you can prevent fertilizer burn from developing. Aerating and fertilizing your lawn will result in a rich and full looking lawn without having to spend a lot of money. And your yard will require less watering to continue looking green. We realize that maintaining such a beautiful lawn and garden requires a year-round commitment from you.
