Coronado is a resort city established in the 1880s and one of the most famous places in California. Located on an island off the coast of San Diego, Coronado is home to the Hotel del Coronado and has multiple beautiful city parks. Neighborhoods are quiet and peaceful with well-established homes, many of which have been there since the 1940s.
Hotel del Coronado
The Hotel del Coronado is the most famous landmark in all of Coronado. The architecture is in the classic Queen Anne grand hotel style of the late 1800s. It is marked with white gingerbread details on wraparound porches. Multiple rotunda turrets and beautiful stained glass windows are showcased throughout the hotel. In 1977, the Hotel was designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Hotel del Coronado has been the shooting location for many films, including Some Like it Hot (1959), My Blue Heaven (1990) and Daydream Hotel (2017). It also is the location for numerous television shows, including Baywatch, and Simon and Jay Leno's Garage.
It is said that the Hotel del Coronado was the inspiration for the city of Oz in Frank Baum's book, The Wizard of Oz. Baum was one of the interior designers for the Hotel and designed the beautiful crown chandeliers in the dining room. One of the primary colors throughout the Hotel is green, which has lead to the Hotel often being referred to as "The Emerald City," because of its association with Baum.
Parks
Spreckels Park is the centerpiece of Coronado. Named after the former owner of the Hotel del Coronado, Spreckels Park is host to numerous community events, including the annual flower show and dog show. In the center of the park is a romantic gazebo, which is a lovely location for weddings and other family celebrations. It is also where Sunday music concerts come to life every week. Spreckels Park is very family-friendly and has a jungle gym and play area for toddlers to older kids.
Tidelands Park is set along the beach and is the perfect location for bike riding, walking along the beach or jumping in the water for a swim. Located off of Gloriana Avenue and Third Street, this park has lots of weekend activities, including baseball, basketball, and soccer. There are paved paths for rollerblading and walking.
Coronado Skate Park was created in the year 2000 within Tidelands Park. The skate park is designed explicitly for skateboarders ranging from beginners to highly experienced. With three bowls, this park is fun for everyone. The most challenging bowl is the 'Teardrop', which is eight feet deep.
The Coronado Lawn Bowling Club was initially established in 1935 but was relocated to a new location in 2010, when the library was expanded, taking over the original bowling greens. Today the Lawn Bowling Club is just adjacent to the library and uses the latest in artificial greens. Bowling is open to the public and lessons are offered to beginners.
Neighborhoods
Village Core is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Coronado. It is the original location of Tent City and is full of homes built in the 1940s and 1950s. The Village Core is full of beautiful craftsman style homes, along with cottages, bungalows, and the occasional Victorian or Georgian style home. Here, you will find lush lawns and established gardens and landscaping. It is a beautiful neighborhood for afternoon and evening strolls.
Ocean Front is a great neighborhood to get to know the people living next door. This is one of the most historic neighborhoods of Coronado, with homes built in the late 1800s. Ocean Front is just three blocks from the Hotel del Coronado and is within walking distance to beaches and neighborhood restaurants and stores.
One of the smallest neighborhoods in Coronado is Country Club Estates. Many of these homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s and have the mid-century modern aesthetic that has become very popular with today's home buyers. Country Club Estates' quiet streets are lined with established trees, green lawns, and beautiful gardens.
