The population of Solana Beach is around 14,000, approaching the 2020 U.S. Census. While there are a wide range of hotels along the coast, you won't find any cheap rooms in this area. It's a place for planning on spending money. The town itself only covers four square miles while the coastline stretches nearly two miles, but every square inch looks valuable. The mix of fresh ocean breeze and warm weather, which averages about 77 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, make it a surreal vacation getaway.


Following the expansion of the United States in the nineteenth century, the town was first settled by the George H. Jones family in 1886. It was known as Lockwood Mesa until 1923 when it was renamed Solana Beach. Developer Colonel Ed Fletcher bought land from Jones throughout the 1920s to develop the beach town. The Fletcher Cove area was created through an erosion process with the help of hydraulic water pressure. The beach opened to the public on July 4, 1925. In 2003 the town made national news by enacting the first smoking ban on public beaches.


Getting to Solana Beach from any other coastal town is simple since each of the towns can be accessed from Route 101 or Interstate 5. It's also a train stop for Amtrak.
