New Braunfels is a charming city in Texas, near San Antonio, filled with natural beauty, historically preserved architecture, and tons of enjoyable outdoor activities. It is home to the largest cavern and the largest concentration of freshwater springs in Texas, Natural Bridge Caverns, and Comal Springs. Did you know that Natural Bridge Caverns was first found by a group of students from St. Mary's University in San Antonio while they were spelunking in the spring of 1960; and that Comal Springs was purchased by William H. Merriweather, a sawmill and cotton gin owner, in 1847. I highly recommend making time this weekend for all the parks, museums, and local establishments that New Braunfels has to offer.
History buffs can experience New Braunfels German heritage and get an understanding of Texas "as it was" at the New Braunfels Conservation Society or take a stroll through Gruene Historic District. The New Braunfels Conservation Society Old Town at Conservation Plaza is a 3.5-acre facility that contains 18 historic buildings that were moved by the Conservation Society to preserve the history of New Braunfels including a one-room schoolhouse, a saloon, and an operational barbershop. The Gruene Historic District is not only rich in history, but also has delicious food, live music, and dancing. Other notable sites that give an understanding of New Braunfels' rich history are the Sophienburg Museum and Archives, New Braunfels Historic Railroad and Modelers Society, Museum of Texas Handmade Furniture, Gruene Antique Company, the Moeller House, the Stones and Bones Museum, and The Lindheimer Home.
Outdoor enthusiasts can go tubing down the Guadalupe River at Rock R River Rides or visit the New Braunfels Tube Chute which is a water slide that is carved into the side of the dam to divert tubers around it as they float down the Comal River. It is the longest slide of its kind in the world. If you enjoy fishing, skiing, swimming or boating I would recommend spending an afternoon at Lake McQueeney or Lake Dunlap. You could go bird watching at the Warbler Woods Bird Sanctuary, enjoy the views from Mission Hill, or spend an enjoyable afternoon with friends playing golf at The Bandit Golf Club. Other notable parks in the New Braunfels area are Cypress Bend Park, Lake Placid, Dittmar Falls, and Panther Canyon Nature Trail.
New Braunfels is a wonderful place to raise a family. I recommend taking your children to the McKenna Children's Museum where they can get creative in the Wonder Shop, lend a hand at the ranch, or take a trip to outer space. Landa Park is a beautiful riverside park with nature trails, a miniature train, and miniature golf. On hot summer days, I recommend taking the kids to Fischer Park to enjoy the splash pad and be sure to join in the activities at the Fischer Park Education Center while you're there. For the more adventurous child, how about the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo where they can get up close with snakes and primates or enjoy the petting zoo and interactive shows. Or, you can float the day away at The Schlitterbahn waterpark, a collection of the largest and most diverse water rides in the world. Whether you like the thrill of the Master Blaster Uphill Water Coaster, a lazy trip down the Torrent River, or just watching the kids at Kinderhaven, Schlitterbahn is sure to please.
When evening comes, I recommend lining up a babysitter and spending the evening enjoying a delicious dinner at one of New Braunfels lovely restaurants. You could have German cuisine at The Alpine Haus Restaurant, or a famous Texas steak at Myron's Prime Steakhouse. Afterward, you can go dancing and listen to live music at any of New Braunfels many music venues such as The Pour Haus, Conway's, Tavern in the Gruene, or the famous Gruene Hall where many famous artists have played such as Wille Nelson. Another great option is seeing a live theatrical performance at the New Braunfels Performing Arts Theatre.
