North of San Antonio, about 30 miles straight out HWY 281, the town of Spring Branch attracts residents who don't want to be too far from where all the action is, yet would prefer a quiet retreat. Many families have lived in the area for nearly a century, while others are relative newcomers. Either way, families enjoy large, spacious lots and plenty of privacy. Spring Branch is a peaceful, secluded country town, yet residents are easily able to enjoy nearby attractions, such as tubing, boating, hiking, or shopping.
Neighborhoods like Cypress Springs, Riverwood, River Crossing, and Lantana Ridge, as well as Whispering Hills, Creekwood Ranches, and others, enjoy easy access to the Guadalupe River. Many neighborhoods have riverfront homes or river access. Tubing is one of the highlights of the hot, Texas summer. Whether one prefers a quieter, peaceful float or a bustling, crowded float, tubing is a simple matter for those who live in Spring Branch. For a less populated experience, there is the tubing livery right under the Guadalupe River Bridge, on 281. Leave a car up the river or take one of the provided shuttles to put the tubes in upstream, and float back to the bridge. When the river is running well, this only takes a couple of hours, but if the river is down, it could take as many as four hours to complete the route. Either way, a good time will be had by all. Afterward, hungry tubers often grab some barbecue and live music at Chicks, or maybe a burger at the Spring Branch Store. Spring Branch residents can also pop home and grill some burgers in their beautiful yards.
Spring Branchers who want a more crowded, party-like atmosphere for tubing usually shoot down HWY 46 to New Braunfels. Due to the crowds, there are a few more rules to follow, but in addition to tubing, one will also have access to Landa Park and, of course, Schlitterbahn. Enjoy some barbecue or German food in one of the many nearby restaurants. Then it's just a short drive home to Spring Branch.
If tubing is not adventurous enough, Spring Branch is also conveniently located near Canyon Lake. Wake surfing, water skiing, swimming, and fishing are just a few minutes away. There are boat rentals available, as well as supplies and fishing bait, for sale at the Marina. There is nothing like a gorgeous sunset on the lake and then returning home for an evening under the stars or on the porch in Spring Branch. It is so peaceful watching fireflies while listening to the call of a Chuck-Will's-Widow or peacock.
In addition to tubing or spending time on the lake, hiking is also a favorite activity in Spring Branch. Guadalupe River State Park is located in Spring Branch on HWY 46. There are popular hiking trails, as well as swimming and camping, in the park. Hikers can also travel north on 281 to Blanco State Park, or just a little further to Pedernales State Park. Then it's just a short drive back to Spring Branch. Many enjoy some time in the hammock after a long hike. On a beautiful day, who wants to go inside the house when the beautiful yard beckons?
Of course, not everyone wants to go tubing, boating, or hiking. No problem - Spring Branch residents are close to some great shopping. There are quaint little antique shops near the Spring Branch Store, not to mention little local shops in Faithville. Some residents prefer to stay local, shop in Spring Branch, and then enjoy some excellent food at nearby restaurants. Others drive to San Antonio, where 281 provides easy access to the shops and restaurants at the Pearl Brewery. After a day in the city, it is a relief to return to the quiet, natural surroundings in Spring Branch.
