Even though Cibolo is part of the San Antonio-New Braunfels metro area, everyone who lives here knows that Cibolo has its own unique flair. The city of Cibolo itself has a long and storied history. The town's population as recently as 1970 was a mere 440 people. Now Cibolo is one of the fastest growing communities in the Metrocom. Cibolo gives you the feeling of being in the country while still being close to the amenities of a major metropolitan area.
History
Located in the western corner of Guadalupe County, Cibolo has several sister cities, including Schertz, Universal City, Selma, and Live Oak, Gardenridge, Kirby and Converse. It also enjoys being close to Randolph Air Force Base, which is a significant training facility for pilots. Cibolo technically only became an independent town in 1965, but its history stems back to the 1800s. The Comanche and other Native American tribes lived throughout the area, because of the Cibolo Creek and lush river valley. Even then, Cibolo was a highly coveted area to live in, because the fertile soil allowed large amounts of maize, corn, oats, and wheat to be grown.
It wasn't long before the Southern Pacific Railroad was being built right into town, and many of the town's earliest settlers were of German descent. A successful store owner, Mr. Schlather, was asked to name the town by the railroad, and he chose Cibolo, which is a Native American word for bison or buffalo. The city of Cibolo is named in honor of Cibolo Creek, which runs through the heart of the area.
Festivals
Since the city's beginning, Cibolo has been a place where people really know how to have fun. Because Cibolo is such a family-focused area, there's always plenty of festivals, like CiboloFest. It's held every year in October in the City Hall parking lot, and it commemorates Cibolo's birthday as a city. There's also the Cibolo Christmas Parade and Easter Egg Hunt, as well as Shred Days. The Parks and Recreation department stays busy hosting disc golf tournaments, kickball tournaments, and food truck round-ups. The city hosts an annual Guns n Hoses basketball game for charity between the fire and police departments. Be sure to check out the Miss Cibolo Scholarship Pageant and the Cibolo Barbeque Cook-off.
Parks and Recreation
For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of parks to enjoy. You can get outside and have fun with your loved ones at the Al Rich Park, which has a picnic area and baseball field. We have Niemetz Park that offers hiking trails, volleyball courts, soccer and baseball fields, as well as basketball courts. Visit Schlather Park for frisbee golfing, barbeque grilling and trails, Veterans Park and the Cibolo Sports Complex. The city has plenty of offerings in terms of our local schools, including Samuel Clemens High School, Allison Steele Enhanced Learning Center and Bryon P. Steele High School, Dobie Junior High and Corbett Junior High, and the Barbara Jordan Intermediate, Laura Ingalls Wilder Intermediate and Elaine S. Schlather Intermediate Schools.
Farmer's Market and Vineyards
There's also the Cibolo Grange Farmers Market that's held on Main Street, and several wine vineyards that offer tours throughout the Cibolo river valley area. You should check out the Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling and Cottonwood Wine Tours. Touring a vineyard is a great way to eat, drink and relax, and you can feel completely removed from the hectic pace of big city living. With so many great places to find entertainment from dining to parks, Cibolo has been named one of the best suburbs in Guadalupe County.
