Schertz is a very odd name for a town in the San Antonio metropolitan area in Texas. However, the city has reached over 40,000 inhabitants, and it is one of the more influential in the area. It has a small-town feel with big-town amenities. It is an excellent place to retire, and it is one of the top 10 school districts in the area. Even though it is a good old, thoroughly American town, its origins are just as thoroughly French.
Joseph and Anna Schertz arrived in the area in 1843 to begin a settlement. They had so much hardship and grief there, including the tragic death of Anna, that the family started right back for France. However, Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels asked them to return and be part of the colony he was starting, and they agreed. This settlement grew, both in population and size, and the start of the Schertz community was there. Members of the family left Texas for a time but were soon forced to return.
Agriculture rapidly became the economic heart of Schertz, and many farmers came to settle the area. Then the railroad and post office came to the town. At this time, the settlement was called Cut-Off rather than Schertz, because Cibolo Creek flooded and caused the area to be "cut-off." It was not until 1899 that it was finally named Schertz.
The Schertz family also created the first water supply plant, which helped to take the place of the sulfur-tainted wells in the area. They even helped to develop a rural telephone system to connect the many miles between people in rural areas. Building projects and population made the community bigger and bigger.
In 1958, Schertz was incorporated and became a city. Although the city has fully embraced modern amenities, the people still enjoy anything that hearkens back to their heritage. The very first telephone office installed in the town is still there, and there are festivals and other things that remind the people of Schertz where they came from.
The SchertzFest is something that comes in the city in September. It is also known as SchertzQ. It started as a celebration of the 50th year of the city and went on to be an annual event. They offer special foods, a market and general festivities for the event.
There are other attractions besides festivals. One great attraction in Schertz is the parks. There are ten parks and playgrounds in Schertz, plus many more that surround the town. One such park is Crescent Bend, Nature Park. It is not the most well-known, which means that you won't have to struggle through crowds or deal with traffic. It is quiet, green and beautiful. It seems that it has a danger in the form of poison ivy, but signs warn people of the spots where they are likely to find the irritating plant. The park creates a very family-friendly environment in which to enjoy nature.
Schertz is also family-friendly in regards to its crime rate. It is very low, and the citizens of Schertz enjoy a peace that is unknown to most cities in the US, whether big or small. All around it are the great attractions of the surrounding cities, including some great areas to go caving or rock climbing. Add this to the fact that they have a great school district, and Schertz begins to look like one of the best cities around for both families and retirees.
The thing that is most difficult for both those groups, however, can be a desire for natural beauty around the home. After all, you can't go to a park every day, and there is nothing like a lush green lawn or a blooming garden to make you feel calmer and happier. Whether you have a young family or are retired, keeping a lawn or a garden healthy and beautiful can be quite a difficult chore. It can take hours of work, strength, and energy that you just don't have anymore.
